MEET OUR TALENTED MAKERS FOR 2021
Michael Doxey
CLAY WORKS Portland ON |
My new work is based on Parametric design. I decided to use my body as the production variable, and simple joining geometric forms as the algorithm. The final act of firing the objects in a wood kiln imparts an ethereal natural finish for the viewer to start their journey on. This journey from the natural to cerebral is intent on reminding us that in our cerebral digital world we are inescapably connected to nature. www.mdoxey.ca Instagram - mike.doxey Facebook - @mdoxey.art |
Anne Warburton
FIBRE ARTS Navan ON |
When we take the time to look at the world around us, we can find both man-made and nature's lines: straight, twisted, imperfect, tattered, threadbare. There is beauty in these timeworn and unspoiled lines, and a need today for moments of awe and wonder. I interpret these artistic lines in my fibre art using layered fabrics and other materials, sewn, slashed, and distressed, rebuilt by shaping, stitching, heat distressing, and embellishing.

Sian Tucker
ARTIST Brockville |
Living in the beautiful Thousand Islands region provides endless inspiration inspiration to be creative. In my paintings I try to capture the mood of the moment, the things we feel that a photograph or our eyes may miss. David Burley
GRAYMALKIN'S WIREWORKS Gananoque ON |
I am a Gananoque based artist who has sold at craft/art fairs in the Kingston area and across south and eastern Ontario for over a decade. I am a self-taught artist and over time I have slowly honed my skills through research, experimentation, and practice and expanded my workspace with new tools and equipment paid for by sales of my work. Whatever it is I make I strive for originality and the unusual. I tend to focus on textures over making things that simply sparkle. In particular, I like the natural colours and patinas offered by copper, steel, and silver. Likewise, when I use stones or organic materials I prefer bleached barn board driftwood, and unusual stones like eudialyte. When vending I display my work on a carefully collected set of colourful stones, antique tools, live plants, and tapestries to stand out and accentuate the style of my work. My art is unmistakably handmade and each piece represents hours of preparation, assembling, and finishing work. Eric Peters
WOODWORKER Lansdowne ON |
Eric Peters' background in art and antiques was expressed in his career of 40 years as a Woodworker specializing in heritage home interiors, staircases, furniture and kitchens. Since his retirement his attention and artistry has turned to creating bowls and hollow form vessels from fresh cut green wood, sourced locally, and then left to dry allowing Nature to reshape them as they dry out. The pieces can take on a unique and interesting re-shaping of their original form during the process. All of Eric’s work is finished with a food safe product. Betty Matthews
|
For many years now I have enjoyed being part of the world of visual art and believe that art – in its many forms – enriches our lives in so many ways. I have unconsciously narrowed my focus to local subjects and history of our town. I really enjoy the memories associated with each finished piece. https://bettymatthewsart.weebly.com/ bettymat@kingston.net |

Maureen McDonald
|
Maureen McDonald began creating pebble art images as gifts for friends and family members, but soon found herself busy filling orders for others. She loves the simplicity of design enforced by this medium, and is thrilled to find a perfect piece of beach glass that evokes the wind lifting a bride’s veil, or two pebbles that fit together perfectly to form a couple in a loving embrace.

Martha Stroud
|
During this second pandemic year, I have been trying to communicate the beauty and joy I have found in the familiar, seen on a daily basis. Daily walks on the K&P Trail, from MetalCraft Marine at the north end of Wellington Street to Quattrocchi's at Rideau and Montreal Streets, have grounded me and connected me to where I am rather than where I might like to be. Portraying different areas of the trail on canvas throughout the seasons has challenged me to look more deeply into each scene. Every morning, everything - the light, the trees, the plants, the animals, the birds - is different from the day before. The swamp, which began as a puddle, is now a lake, thanks to the hard work of a beaver who took up residence about a year ago. I am profoundly grateful to have this access to nature, and am reminded daily of my luck at the far end of my walk as I turn around at the Hub, the centre for the homeless in Kingston. I am also grateful, and a bit surprised, at how my 'sense of place' paintings have resonated with friends and family over the past year. I cherish my need to paint, no matter what other stresses there are in my life.

John Sorensen
|
John Sorensen's background as an architectural antique dealer and passion for ballroom dancing influence his choice of subject matter. He uses the rich warm colours and texture obtained from traditional oil paint to interpret his two primary interests – old room interiors and “ordinary” people dancing or just sharing a quiet moment together.

For the many years I've been felting, I've never ceased to be amazed by the applications of this extraordinary ancient art. It has been exciting to explore what feels like the limits of this craft to develop new and unique products for both function and beauty. The natural world is the predominant theme of my work, though colour and light is what most often catches my eye and whisks me away on new artistic explorations. My aim is that my work would bring a little joy or solace to the heart of the receiver. https://www.facebook.com/poeciledesigns https://www.instagram.com/poeciledesigns/ http://www.suesteffes.com |
